Downtown Appleton – College Avenue
Taken from the skywalk that goes over college avenue in Appleton, Wisconsin. I still want to do a snow night shoot and a light trail similar to this shot.
Day 31 – College Avenue on Fire!
I made it the entire month of January, Woot! This shot comes from the walkway from Evans Title to the Hotel. I loved the sky and after getting out of work I knew I wanted this shot right away. I’m still hoping to come down to college avenue for some night shooting. Would be cool with some light trails.
Historic Fox River Mills
Located on the north bank of the Fox River, the former Fox River Mills is an aggregation of three old paper mill buildings. On the National Register of Historic Places, the brick buildings date from 1883 through 1915. Two of the buildings served as paper converting plants as late as 1985. The buildings are located just two blocks from College Avenue, a short walk to shopping, the Performing Art Center, fine dining, churches, the library, and Lawrence University.

Day 17 – Appleton Waterfront
Fratellos Waterfront Restaurant is in the former Vulcan Hydroelectric Power Plant which constructed in 1909 on a portion of the stone foundation of the 1881 Kimberly-Clark Vulcan Paper Mill. The original bedrock is still visible underneath the bar windows. The Vulcan Paper Mill was constructed to manufacture book paper. Like the Hearthstone mansion, perched on the bluff above, it was wired to receive electricity from a Thomas Edison dynamo generator connected to the water wheel of the Appleton Pulp and Paper Mill. These two papermills and Hearthstone (which is open to the public as a museum) became the first buildings in the world to be lit with hydroelectricity from a central power station. In 1908 the Vulcan Paper Mill was dismantled. The Vulcan power plant generated hydroelectricity for several Kimberly-Clark paper mills, including the Atlas Mill directly east of the building. The building is an L-shaped brick structure that sits on the bank of a power channel of the Fox River. The turbine room, now the bar, housed four original 1909 electric generating devices with wooden gears. During its years of operation, until it closed in 1974, the generating capacity at the plant varied between 1,350 and 1,450 kilowatts.
Day 16 – The PAC
The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center opened its doors to the public on November 25, 2002 in Appleton, Wisconsin to rave reviews.
The new $45 million facility opened its doors only 31 months after breaking ground. Not only was the facility built in a record amount of time, but it also was able to accomplish its goal of raising the $45 million through the private contributions of over 2,700 local residents and businesses. Boldt Construction Company worked closely with Zeidler Grinnell Partnership Architects and Artec Consultants to assure that this facility was world-class in both the amenities and the acoustics it has to offer its audiences.
