Day 45 – Original Yoda painting by Stanley Witmeyer

Day 45. My Grandpa drew this back in 1982 and have treasured this painting the entire time. Obviously I was a huge Star Wars fan, as everyone I knew was back then.

Today is a very special day to me, as Valentine’s Day is my Grandpa’s Birthday. He would have turned 99 today. Happy Birthday Grandpa!!

Stanley Witmeyer was my Grandfather, my mentor, a great friend, my hero, and the main reason I became interested in Art and Photography.

Stanley the Grandpa
Reflecting back one of my youngest and favorite memories was taking drives. He used to have a talking car, well it said a few words but always seemed like it was just like KITT! You opened the door and it would say the door is ajar. He always let me sit on his lap and let me steer. I remember almost hitting a parked car but Grandpa always steered it in the right way in the knock of time.

Stanley the Mentor
I talked quite a bit when I started my first “real graphic design” job. He took great interest and love to talk about the different techniques when he used to go to school as well as when he taught art at R.I.T (Rochester Institute of Technology – watch his alumni video). My favorite moment was a message he left me on my voice mail back in 1995. He told me to always follow my dream, he believed in me and knew I had a bright future in whatever I decide to do. Give 100% in whatever you do because you will go places. Follow your heart and GIVE IT THE STIFF FIST…HU HA! Absolutely love that last saying from him.

Stanley the Friend
My Grandpa is everyone’s best friend. He loved the world and touched many lives. When Stanley started telling one of his stories, everyone would shut the hell up and listen to what he had to say. Whatever he would talk about always seemed amazing to me. HE was sharp as a nail all the way to the day he passed away at the age of 98. I will truly miss you every single day.

Stanley the Hero
I have always looked up to my Grandpa. I covered most of the things above. If i am half the man my Grandfather was I will be happy. In my mind he is the perfect role model in every aspect. I had the pleasure of giving my son, Cooper, Stanley as his middle name. One of the greatest moments in my life was calling him and telling him I gave “Stanley” as Cooper’s middle name. The reaction was awesome just as much when he actually got to meet Cooper for the first time.

This will probably be the only time I write such a long post. I’m not much of a writer and rather just tell stories through my photos. Thank you Grandpa for everything and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I love you, I miss you and hopefully I am making you proud!

For those who knew Stanley Witmeyer, I would love for you to share any stories.
